Projektbüro HIL D 24.1 - ETH

For the ETH Architecture Department in Zurich, a new spatial concept brings together flexibility, function and design. The generously proportioned space remains open, allowing for a fluid organisation that can adapt to different needs. Rugs, furniture and existing architectural elements subtly define distinct zones, creating areas for work, meetings, workshops or exhibitions without compromising the overall sense of openness.

At the centre of this concept lies the XYZ Rug, designed by Christoffer Jørgensen. Inspired by the Cartesian coordinate system, the rug translates a fundamental architectural principle into a spatial experience. With a diameter of nearly eight metres, it becomes more than a textile object. It acts as a focal point within the room.

The rug is designed to host group architectural viewings in virtual reality, transforming the floor into an immersive platform for shared exploration. It reflects the forward-thinking approach of ETH Zurich, one of the world’s leading universities in science and engineering, where innovation and design intersect.
