We’re thrilled to share our latest 4Spaces project at the renowned Gropius Bau Museum in Berlin—a creative journey with Kerstin Brätsch, a contemporary visual artist known primarily as a painter and for her collaborative work with Adele Röder in DAS INSTITUT and with Debo Eilers in KAYA. Born in Hamburg, Germany, she earned her MFA from Columbia University in New York City, where she now lives and works. Brätsch creates large-scale, highly abstract works using diverse media, often displayed unconventionally—such as being hung by magnets, draped, or framed between sheets of glass—blurring the lines between exhibition and performance. DAS INSTITUT, formed in 2007 with Röder, explores image dissemination and production through a mix of Brätsch’s paintings and Röder’s digital projections and posters, often involving other collaborators. In 2024, she was among 18 artists selected to create installations for JFK Airport’s new Terminal 6, opening in 2026.
Her visionary designs transform the children’s play area, BAUBAU, into a vibrant, fantastical world where imagination knows no bounds.
This immersive space invites visitors of all ages to rediscover the playful, childlike spirit within. The room is alive with colorful depictions of dinosaurs, mythical creatures, and marbling gemstones, brought to life on our Groovy fabric with exquisite recto-verso printing and vivid fossil-inspired prints on our Tulle 300, creating an enchanting, textural interplay.
A standout feature of the project is the large-scale, sinuous-shaped rug, custom-printed with Kerstin’s exclusive compositions. This piece anchors the space, making it both a visual centerpiece and a tactile delight.
Gropius Bau is one of Europe’s most important exhibition pavilions, celebrated for its groundbreaking contemporary art and archaeological exhibitions. It consistently redefines cultural boundaries and enhances its global reputation.
With BAUBAU, Kerstin Brätsch has reimagined a children’s play area where creativity takes center stage. The ethos? Here, more is allowed than forbidden.
We’re honored to have been part of this extraordinary project, blending artistry and design to create a space that sparks wonder.
